The Old Testament - 1409 Words

The Bible has many reoccurring themes throughout the books of the Old Testament. These themes help followers learn about their faith, their God, and their beliefs. They lead them to occasionally question their faith but come back to God in the end. This is similar to the people who the Bible speaks of in its stories. The idea of questioning God and disobeying Him is not a new concept to Him. He wants people to believe in Him but understands that sometimes people will refuse Him. He is willing to forgive when this happens. A theme that is reoccurring in many stories of the Bible is that when there are times of corruption amongst God’s people, it is followed by God’s forgiveness. An interesting point that Towner makes about this is that Adam and Even felt shameful about their nakedness and God understood this. Towner states that â€Å"Yahweh understand this sensitivity, and knows that the fig leaf loincloths will not meet the need† (48). This act shows the care that God has for people. The two of them had sinned against Him but he does not care. In this moment, He is a God of compassion and forgiveness. He then proceeds to send them out of the garden but he makes sure that they are clothed first. Towner goes on to talk about the story as a whole stating, â€Å"It is a story about God†¦who will not leave his beloved creatures to their fates even when they defy him to his face or thrust a spear in his side† (53-5 4). This is saying that even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God, he continued to love them. God forgives them and is not too harsh on them even though they have just committed a huge sin. This story exemplifies God’s forgiveness because he shows mercy to the pair of sinners. He could have done much worse to the two but simply banishes them from the garden. He stays in their lives and still speaks to them after the incident. This shows that he does forgive them for their sin. God just wants what is best for these humans he has made.
